User guide for the reference management software EndNote.

Importing Sources from Medicine and Health Databases

Direct import of a single reference:

1. Choose "Cite" on the left side of the reference you want to export to EndNote.

2. Choose "Download nbib".

3. What happens next depends on your web browser, but usually the export file will be saved. Choose "Open" from the browser's download list to send the file's content to EndNote.

EndNote will now only list the imported references. References from PubMed are usually imported correctly.

Click on ”All references” in the left pane to see all references in the library.

1. Go through the result list and tick the boxes for relevant articles for export to EndNote.

2. Choose "Send to" from the menu above the result list.

3. Choose "Citation manager" from the drop-down menu.

4. Choose "Create file".

2-3. Alternatively, choose "Share" above the result list to export all references on the page. Repeat this if the result list is more than one page. It is also possible to get the complete search result sent by email (see more information below).

4.   When you are finished, choose "Folder view" (on the right side of the result list) or choose "Folder" from the blue main menu on the top of the page.

5. In the import folder, tick the boxes for the references that you want to export.

6. Tick this box if you want all the references in the folder to be exported.

9. Choose "Save"

10. Tick this box if you want the content in the export folder deleted after export is complete.

Importing the complete search result:

It is possible to get the complete search result sent to you via email as a export file (in the RIS format). This may take some time depending on the size of the search.

11. Choose "Share".

12. Ask to get an email with the complete search result.

13. Submit your email address and tick for RIS--format.

14. Choose "Send".

An email will be sent to you with a zip-file that you must download. Right-click on the file and ask that it is unpacked. The references in the file will now be imported to your EndNote library. It is important that EndNote is open before you do this.

EndNote will now only list the imported references. References from Medline (Ebsco) are usually imported correctly.

Click on ”All references” in the left pane to see all references in the library.

The Cochrane-filter supplied with EndNote will normally provide correct imports to your library, but we recommend that you check the imported references as errors may occur. Errors or missing data can be manually updated later.

Screenshot 1 shows the method for exporting one or more references from Cochrane to EndNote. Screenshot 2 shows the menu used for choosing correct export format for references to be exported from Cochrane to EndNote.

1. Go through the result list and tick the boxes for relevant articles for export to EndNote.

2. Tick the box "Select All" if you want to import all references in the search.

3. Choose "Export selected citation(s)" from the menu above the result list.

4. Choose format "RIS (EndNote)".

5. Choose "Download".

What happens next depends on your web browser, but usually the export file will be saved. Choose "Open" from the browser's download list to send the file's content to EndNote.

EndNote will now only list the imported references. The import filter for Cochrane Library may cause some reference errors that need to be manually corrected later. We recommend that you check the references after the import.

Click on ”All references” in the left pane to see all references in the library.
