To be sure that your citations and the reference list are correct, you must choose the correct style from the style menu.
1. Go to the EndNote tab in Word.
2. If you find your preferred style in the shortcut list, click on it to select it for the manuscript.
3. To gain access to all available styles, choose "Select another style".
4. Browse the list until you find the correct list (if you quickly touch the key for the first letters in the style name, you will jump down the list closer to the correct style) and then highlight it to select it.
5. Click "OK" or "Choose".
If the style you are looking for is missing on the list, you can search for it in EndNote's style database, that contains more than 6000 styles. See the tab "Add More Styles" above to get more information). Norwegian versions of some popular styles can be found in NTNU Academic Writing (the Norwegian version).
When you install EndNote, you will get access to 500 styles. You can add addition styles form EndNote's style database (with more than 7500 styles) or Norwegian styles from NTNU Academic Writing (the Norwegian version). You can access EndNote's style database from the main menu in EndNote (Help --> EndNote Output Styles). Downloaded styles are attached to the EndNote software and not your library meaning that you need to download the style again if you are using EndNote on another computer.
If you need help to find a style or need to do changes to an existing style because of errors or missing information, contact the library.
The examples below show how to download the Norwegian APA style from NTNU Academic Writing and a style for the journal Lupus from the EndNote style database.

Main content and formatting of citations and the reference list is controlled bye the chosen style. But the styles do not control font type and size. This should normally follow the chosen font and font size in Word, but sometime this doesn't happen. If you need to change the font and font size for the citations and reference list manually, you can do this from the EndNote menu.
1. Choose the arrow / icon in the EndNote menu (see figure above).
2. Choose the tab "Layout".
3. Choose the font and font size required.
4. Finish with "OK" and close the style window.
1. Choose "Configure Bibliography".
Follow the instruction above for PC (2-4).
Sometimes it is necessary to modify a citation in the text. Example:
Doe reported an observation ... .
If you use an author/date style and insert a citation here, you will get a double author name: Doe (Doe, 2024) reported an observation ... . This is incorrect.
You can solve this by clicking on the citation and go to the EndNote menu in Word and choose "Edit citation and bibliography".
1. In the new window, check that the correct reference is highlighted.
2. From the "Formatting" download menu, choose "Exclude Author".
3. Choose "OK".
This will remove the author name in the parenthesis and the citation will be correct: Doe (2024) observed .... .
If you want to hide a citation in the text and only want it to appear in the reference list, choose "Show Only in Bibliography".
The "Edit citation" menu can be directly accessed by right-clicking on the citation in the text.
