There are several ways to insert sources (citations) into your manuscript using EndNote.
NB! We recommend that you tidy up your library and find and delete duplicates before inserting citations into the manuscript.
1. Place the cursor in the text where you want to insert a source (citation).
2. Go to the EndNote tab in Word.
3. Choose the "Insert Citation" icon to the left of the EndNote menu.
4. In the new window, add information about the source and choose "Find." You can search for anything but it is common to search for author name(s) or title word(s).
5. Highlight the required source in the result list and choose "Insert".
6. EndNote will now insert the citation into the text and it will be formatted to the style you have chosen (your can change style later at any time).
7. In addition, a reference list will be created in the end of the manuscript and the reference will be added to it.
If you want to use another style for your manuscript,. you can find and change style in the style window.
It is possible to insert one or more sources into your manuscript by choosing them in your library prior to sending them to Word.
1. Go to your EndNote library and highlight the references you want to insert into the manuscript. Press the Ctrl-key (PC) or the Cmd-key (MAC) to highlight more than one reference at the same time.
2. If you placed the cursor correctly in the text prior to going to your library, you can choose the quotation mark icon in the shortcut menu to insert the citation(s) in to the manuscript (shown above).
3. If you didn't choose the correct place in the text for the citation before choosing sources in the library, you need to return to Word and place the curson correctly in the next. Then you can go to the drop down menu "Insert Citation" in the EndNote menu and choose "Insert Selected citation".
4. EndNote will now insert the citation into the text and it will be formatted to the style you have chosen (your can change style later at any time).
5. In addition, a reference list will be created in the end of the manuscript and the reference will be added to it.
If you want to use another style for your manuscript,. you can find and change style in the style window.
The safe way to remove sources (citations) in the text is to use the EndNote menu.
1. Click in the citation in the text where you want to remove a source.
2. From the EndNote-menu choose "Edit & Manage Citations".
3. Check that the correct reference is highlighted.
4. Choose "Remove Citation" from the drop down menu to the right.
5. Choose "OK".
The citation in the text will be removed and the reference will also be automatically be removed from the reference list (unless it is used somewhere else in the manuscript).
6. If you want to delete a paragraph or a larger text segment that contains citations, you can highlight all the text and use the delete/backspace key. In cases like this it is not necessary to remove the citation first and delete the text afterwards. The reference list will be updated automatically as mentioned previously when the citation(s) are deleted.
Sometimes it is necessary to include a page number in a citation (NB! Always page number in the citation for direct quotes). Using page numbers in citations vary between disciplines. You can find more information about this in NTNU Academic Writing.
1. Click on the citation in the text.
2. Choose "Edit & Manage Citations" from the EndNote menu.
3. In the next window, add the following in the "Suffix" field: Comma space and the page number (including "p." after the number). An example: ", p. 45". If you write in Norwegian, the "p" should be changed to "s". The rule for the suffix field is: What you write is what you get.
4. Choose "OK".
5. The citation will be updated with the page information.
6. If you use one of the APA styles, you can add just a page number in the "Pages field (not need for additional information). The style will add "p." or "s." depending on the style language.
