User guide for the reference management software EndNote.

Settings and Set Up

To improve EndNote's find full text function we recommend that you add the path to NTNU's OpenURL-server in EndNote's preferences. Use the following URL:

http://bibsys-almaprimo.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/openurl/NTNU_UB/NTNU_UB_services_page

1. Choose "Edit" (PC)/"EndNote 21" (MAC).

2. Choose "Preferences" ("Settings" in some MAC-versions)

3. Choose "Find full text"

4. Tick all four boxes.

5. Copy the URL above and past it into "OpenUrl path".

6. Choose "OK" (PC)/"Save" and close window (MAC) to complete the activation.

NB! If you click on the NTNU's Open URL you will get an error message. This URL will only work together with the EndNote software.

Add a journal term list with abbreviations in an empty library:

EndNote is supplied with several journal term lists with abbreviations for different disciplines. We recommend that you add a term list for your discipline to your library before you start adding references to the library.

See below if you want to add a journal term list to a library with references.

Adding a term list is done only one time and the list is connected to your library and not to the program. If you have several libraries, you need to add the term list to each library.

NB! You should only import one journal term list to avoid conflicts if the same journal is listed in several lists wit different abbreviations.

Screenshot showing how to import a list of standard abbreviations for journal names into an empty EndNote library.

1. Choose "Library".

2. Choose "Define Term Lists".

3. Choose the tab "Lists".

4. Choose "Journals".

5. Choose "Import List".

PC-users will be automatically directed to the correct folder with the available journal term lists. If you belongs to the medicine/health discipline, you must choose the file "medical.txt". The choose "Open". The chosen term list will now be included into your library and you will get  a message confirming this. To complete, choose "Close".

MAC-users must manually browse to find the correct folder which is located here:

Applications/Programmer → EndNote 21 → Terms → Medical.txt

If you experience any errors with standard abbreviations in your reference list, check our help-pages in the main menu.

Add a journal term list with abbreviations in a library with references:

If you want to add a journal term list after you have created a library and filled it with content, you need to empty the existing term list before adding the new list.
