EndNote can automatically find and download full text files (usually PDF-files) into references in your library if the full text is available either by subscription or open access. This function will mainly work for journal articles.
NB! You must be connected to the NTNU's- or St. Olav's network (directly or by using VPN) for this to work properly.
1. Highlight the reference(s) that you want EndNote to retrieve the full text for.
2. Choose "Search the web for full text" from the shortcut menu above the references.
3. EndNote will try to find and download the PDF-files from the Internet for the selected references.
4. The result will be shown in the group set "Find Full Text" in the left pane. In the group "Found PDF" you will find the references that were successfully updated with a PDF with the full text. In "Not Found" EndNote will put the references were no full text was found/retrieved. "Found URL" contains references where EndNote found the PDF but was not able to add it to the reference in the library (usually because of technical issues or no subscription to the journal).
The main reason for EndNote not being able to retrieve the full text is lack of subscription to the journal. But sometimes is is due to technical issues or that the publisher is preventing this kind of PDF-downloads. A list of publishers who do not allow EndNote to download full text can be found here.
In cases like this you must download the PDF manually and then attach it to the reference manually yourself. See more information about this choosing the other tab on this page.
5. References with attached PDF-files will have a paperclip icon in the result list (on the left side of the reference).
If EndNote fails to find and download the PDF-file for you, you must find the full text your self on the Internet or ask the library for help. When you have downloaded the PDF-file, you can attach it to the reference. It is also possible to add other file types to references (Word-files, picture files etc.).
1. Highlight the reference and choose "Attach File" in the upper part of the right pane (if "Summary" mode is chosen). Find and select the PDF-files and attach it.
2. A copy of the PDF-files is added to the reference in your library. The original file can be deleted.
